Granted, the healthcare advocate trusted by more than 25,000 families, today announced Clear the Bill, a program that pays off medical bills for Texas school employees. Entries open August 31 and close September 12, 2026. Granted will select up to ten finalists from among all complete entries and pay off up to two bills in full, directly to the provider.
Teachers, aides, counselors, nurses, bus drivers, cafeteria and custodial staff, and district office staff across Texas are eligible. Entering is free and takes about ten minutes: upload a medical bill and complete Granted's intake.
Texans are paying more on their hospital bills than the rest of the country
Data from the Granted platform shows how much higher healthcare costs are for Texas families. On hospital bills uploaded to Granted this year, the average Texan's share came to $1,301, compared with $694 across the rest of the country.
The gap shows up in outcomes too. Whenever Granted lowered a bill this year, Texans saved $944 on average and $679 at the median, against $676 and $451 for members in other states. Bigger savings on the same kind of work points to one thing: Texans are being billed more to start with and have a greater opportunity to save than people in the rest of the country.
The volume behind these numbers keeps growing. Members now upload an average of more than $2 million in medical bills to the Granted platform every week.
While these figures are directional and drawn from bills members chose to upload, the pattern is consistent with what is already known about medical bills: most families are eligible for discounts of 50% or more, around 40% of bills contain errors, and fewer than 1% of denied claims are ever appealed. Money is being left on the table, and in Texas the table is bigger.
What is Clear the Bill?
Clear the Bill is a Granted initiative to help Texas educators clear their medical bills. Upload a hospital bill dated within the last nine months to grantedhealth.com/texas, and a bill already in collections is fine. Granted gets to work on it: checking every charge for errors, negotiating the balance down, and applying for income-based discounts. For the entries selected, Granted goes all the way and pays off the remaining balance in full, directly to the hospital.
Granted reviews every complete entry against the criteria published at grantedhealth.com/texas and selects up to ten finalists. Finalists verify their income and household details and sign a media release. From that group, Granted selects up to two recipients whose bills are paid off. Recipients owe Granted nothing on that bill.
Who can enter
Texas school employees of every kind are eligible: teachers, aides, counselors, nurses, bus drivers, cafeteria and custodial staff, and campus and district office staff, full-time or part-time. To enter, these things have to be true:
You live in Texas and are 18 or older
You work for a Texas school or school district
Your bill is from a Texas hospital, and the date of service is within the past nine months
The balance is at least $300, and bills already in collections count
Your entry is complete: the bill and the finished form
How to enter
Entering takes about ten minutes at grantedhealth.com/texas. Upload your hospital bill (a photo of the paper bill works) and finish the income-based discount form. It asks for household income, family size, and where you work—the same form Granted uses to check any member for income-based discounts.
Every entry gets an advocate
Entries that are not selected stay with a Granted advocate. Granted checks each bill for errors, appeals denied claims, negotiates balances, and applies for income-based discounts. That work costs nothing upfront. If Granted lowers a bill, the member sees and approves a 10% success fee on the savings before Granted collects anything.

Medical bills can be checked, disputed, and negotiated. Few people have someone to do it for them.
